What is the best bag for my trip.?

I will be flying for the holidays this year. I'm used to driving in which I can take almost anything I want. My main concern is what to wear on the plane. I'd like something lighweight but spacious. I have a camera 2 Canon IS I bring my mp3 player too. I have to take medication and jewelry. I'm taking a 2 12 inch dolls (do not ask:) I also like to have a change of clothes, toothbrush, things like that if you lose the rest of my luggage. I looked in the backpacks, messenger bags, etc. not really know what to achieve. If you have any experience with this I would appreciate your advice. Maybe just a backpack and a small suitcase. Get a slightly larger bag because you said you want to put things in spare If it was lost.
